Spiritual Self-Reliance
How do we assess the importance of spiritual and temporal Self-Reliance?

President Thomas S. Monson has said, “Let us be Self Reliant and independent…Salvation can be obtained on no other principle.”

How then might we improve our spiritual Self Reliance? The Apostle Paul defined that condition man must reach to be truly spiritually Self Reliant. It is the condition in which a man has earned the right to have the living of the Gospel written “not in ink; but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in the fleshy tables of the heart.”

- Elder Robert A Dryden, Area Seventy

You are a loved child of God
First every person must know that he or she is a child of God and is loved by Him. People need to realise that regardless of their circumstances, as desperate as those may be, they are entitled to the Light of Christ in their lives.
Appraise our lives
Second, we need to appraise our own lives. How well are we listening to the Spirit? Are we living according to the eternal truths and doctrines of the restored Church of Jesus Christ? Can we effectively appraise the needs of others by the prompting of the Spirit?

You have agency to make choices
Third, we need to remember that every man and every woman has the God-given right to choose what he or she will believe and do.
The ability to think straight
Fourth, master the ability to think straight. As Franklin said, “The foundation of all happiness is thinking rightly.” This may be more important in the future as the world continues to spiral downward and crumble into moral decay.

Trust the Lord
Fifth, seek guidance from the Lord and trust in Him.
